Hello,
I am trying to install Sharepoint on 1 box and SQL on a second box.
I get an error specifying the specific sql box name. that sharepoint cannot
see it.

the versions are:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP3
Windows Sharepoint Services 2003

I installed the SQL client tools on my sharepoint box. And can connect to
the SQL box and see the databases on it.
why can sharepoint not see the SQL box?
Is there a back door, where i can create an odbc connection to it?
can someone give some insite on this?
thanks

Greg,

Have you ruled out the possibility that it's an access denied issue? With
what user are you authenticating to SQL for your SPS setup, and does that
user have db creation rights as well as db security admin rights?

If that fails, can you configure SPS to use SQL by its IP address?

Sorry, i cannot give the actual text of the error.
we are configuring on a single box right now.
the error was in the sharepoint central admin page. where you configure the
database server.
And you specify the server name.
it was like an error stating something to the fact that we are unable to
connect/server not found.

forgot to add, the boxes are on the same domain, but different subnets.
would this matter?
port 1433 is open. is there another port it would use?

thanks

Make sure that in your SQL box --> in the enterprise manager - look under
the Security --> Logins and make sure that you have your Sharepoint account
added to the security Logins

as (minimum)
Security Administrator
Table Creator
and that account has acess to all of the Databases for sharepoint.

In addition to these, make sure the account is a member of STS_WPG, SPS_WPG
and IIS_WPG security groups on the box.
