Reinstalling/removing portal server 2003

We had issues with our Portal 2003 and I wanted to start again. So I tried to
uninstall Sharepoint windows standard and portal server.

I deinstalled IIS and all associated services and reinstalled. I have now
IIS running and can access the FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 Server
Administration via:

"Microsoft SharePoint Administration" it shows:
Default Web Site http://tserver 5.0.2.5012 Administration
http://tserver:8099 5.0.2.5012

I can click on on "Administration" link but when I click on the
http://tserver:8099 I get:
--------------------------------------
The page must be viewed over a secure channel
The page you are trying to access is secured with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Type https:// at the beginning of the address you are attempting to reach
and press ENTER.
HTTP Error 403.4 - Forbidden: SSL is required to view this resource.
Internet Information Services (IIS)
-----------------------------------

But in windows components I still have Portal Server 2003 listed. If I try
to remove it, the app goes through and almost at the end i get:

"Installation ended prematurely because of an error"
(not very helpful!)then:
" fatal error during installation" No kidding!

I uninstalled Windows Sharepoint services standard which I think is now
gone, but I tried to reinstall this and get:

- internal error 2337 MS Desktop engine (we run MSQL Server)
and then just backs out of the install.

It seems to me that bits of the old installation are still on the machine
and causing issues with the repair or removal.
Is there anyway to completely remove everything manually?

regards John

I managed to figure it out.
- put the sysadm.exe back into the portal server directory
- disabled virus protection
- deleted sharepoint in the registry
- then managed to uninstall both and reinstall
